INSPIRED COACHING FOR EQUESTRIAN WOMEN WHO WANT MORE
So Many Rituals, Such Perfect Timing...
March 24, 2014
In like a lion...out like a lamb. Oh humbug!
As I walk my dog, Jack, the cold air biting at my face, all I can think of are the rumors. Spring is coming, they say. Warm weather soon. We are leaning into spring, but not quite fast enough for some of us. (Read: ME.)
I take Jack to a nearby park everyday that has a looping trail through the woods. It's peaceful. It's serene. It's a gift to myself (and my boy!) It's sacred time to walk in silence, breath deep, think, move, be...I've been doing this for two weeks now and it's dawned on me...a new "ritual" has been born.
I grew up playing in forests & streams with my magic staff, chanting and casting spells on unsuspecting schoolmates with my other magic wand waving friends. We'd spend hours and hours finding the perfect ingredients for our cauldrons, we wrote our spells in secret society notebooks filled with diagrams and pressed wild flowers. We had codes and a secret language. We were youngsters but we created a world full of powerful rituals. Our rituals bonded us, inspired us, gave us a connection that we could count on. These rituals held magic for us.
Sleepovers were all the rage back then and that's where our natural love of family rituals blossomed. From the way we played our childhood games, to family dinners, holiday and summertime vacations, religious coming of age ceremonies...all around our young souls...more rituals. I loved my family's rituals, well, most of them anyway...(my brother's summer ritual of hanging me on a coat peg in the mudroom from my bathing suit not so much...) But even more fun was visiting friends families and being immersed in their rituals! Oh yeah- bring it on! The wackier, the better in my mind. I loved the quirky...the ones where my friends would be whispering.."Sorry, my Mom's from bladdy-blah...they do that there..." I just ate it up. Candles? Special scents? Foods prepared a certain way? Music and ceremony?! Oh yes! I was in love with the mystical habits of these families.
Now, as an adult, I find myself completely drawn to and soothed by rituals. I consider a ritual anything that we do consistently that has a "sacred" feel to it, more than the "to-do" feel of a habit. Although, the two can overlap and both have positive effects...what I'm leaning into right now is consciously bringing more "sacred" time into my everyday life.
Life will challenge us. That's just a raw fact. How we handle the challenges and immerge from the situation is how we measure growth, development and success. As a constant student, I am always educating myself in ways to enjoy life more. Suck the juice out more. Laugh more. Feel more. Learn more. Grow more. Succeed more. The way I accomplish this is to work on my core self. My center. To be still. At peace with what is. Forgiving for what has been. Excited for what will be.
Rituals are a path to living out our spirituality. What we do everyday screams the truth of our religion, spiritual practice or belief system more than any words ever can. To create and honor rituals in our everyday lives is to invite the sacred into our everyday world. This is what I wish for all of us...a bit more of the sacred.
My gift for you to ponder, is this...what are your rituals? Do you have any rituals? Do you remember rituals from your childhood? Have you helped your family create rituals? Hmmmm...let's have fun with this question....Rituals??? Rituals....having tea in the garden and reading poetry every morning...meditating for 10 minutes before the kids get up...lighting candles for dinner EVERY night and keeping a family gratitude journal...walking the dog in a special spot and letting yourself just "be" for that time...a bath by candlelight every Sunday evening...holding hands with your partner in bed every night and saying what you love about each other before you fall asleep...a secret, special good-bye with the kids for each time you part ways...the list goes on and on.
Bringing family and friends in on creating rituals is generous and creates magical outcomes.
For our children, we are creating a life-time memory, a calm within themselves they can call on when their storm is brewing.
For our friends, we are creating bonds, strength, peace and joyful memories.
For our lovers and partners, we are creating a higher level of sacred love.
And for ourselves, we are creating our own miracle. Trust me on this...one day you'll be mindlessly doing your "ritual"- because that's what you do...and the sacred energy of life will wash over you. Ahhhh....I'm giddy thinking about it happening for everyone!
With enough people practicing sacred rituals, the energy shift will be profound and world changing.
Together, you and I, walking our dog's, sipping our tea, lighting our candles, climbing our mountains...always together & always enjoying the joy of our rituals.
